Torque is a buggy pile of crap. And their support is non existent. They give source code so you can fix all the bugs in their shitty code so they don't have to be bothered with supporting it or you... and you can only build similar Tribes style games with it..

I was a little surprised by Spolsky's comment about writing your own 3D engine, but I see where he's coming from. It goes back to that thing about nothing being in black and white and instead being on what it is that you're looking to accomplish.
Even then those are rare cases, so I'm amazed when I hear someone make an excuse against reuse.

Nothing is ever black and white is it? I think premature dismissal of reuse of other libraries is probably a cousin of premature optimisation.
As an aside to Joel really say that about DirectX? It is a pretty thin API really. You would have to be pretty much insane to try and hit the 3d hardware without either DirectX or OpenGl these days.

How does Xobni work?? I use Outlook Track-It and it gave me a toolbar that reminds me and the recipient to send a followup email. Is it the same? Outlook Track-It is my savior right now. Let me know.

Rob, I agree. I had to drag myself to that session, being the end of the day and all, but Robert Martin was very entertaining and really helped to substantiate a lot of my thoughts on craftsmanship. And honestly, I can't get out of my head "BUGS?!? BUGS!??!"

I'm glad I attended the Clean Code II session, though I almost didn't go. It turned out to be a strong presentation and gave me a nice boost that really helped salvage the day for me. It's always nice to end on a positive note.
