		<description>I was a little surprised by Spolsky&#039;s comment about writing your own 3D engine, but I see where he&#039;s coming from. It goes back to that thing about nothing being in black and white and instead being on what it is that you&#039;re looking to accomplish.
Even then those are rare cases, so I&#039;m amazed when I hear someone make an excuse against reuse.

		<description>Nothing is ever black and white is it?  I think premature dismissal of reuse of other libraries is probably a cousin of premature optimisation.
As an aside to Joel really say that about DirectX?  It is a pretty thin API really.  You would have to be pretty much insane to try and hit the 3d hardware without either DirectX or OpenGl these days.
