Larrabee’s Here – In Spirit

Intel's announcement of Larrabee the other day is certainly something to watch out for in the future. Of course, Intel has had other fantastic announcements in the past only for them to flop – no pun intended.

So now I'm curious what the other industry players are going to counter with, if anything. Larrabee technology probably won't be available for several more years, so there's plenty of opportunity for the others to stake their territory. In some ways I think the Larrabee details release may be a little premature, particularly with the long wait until its ready for primetime, but then that's how Intel has worked in the past – why change now?

NVIDIA seems to be in the best position to offer a counter the near-term, or at least an alternative technology. They seem to have their act together more than AMD, who may be dying a slow, painful death. The ATI acquisition didn't help much either – I bet AMD didn't know they were gaining so many more WoW players than graphics engineers when they purchased ATI.
